Why FISH-i Africa works

International and regional cooperation is key to addressing IUU fishing cases successfully.

The investigation of IUU fishing incidents requires highly technical analysis, access to databases, and a strong network of experts within the global community.  FISH-I Africa has combined these tools with country-level political will, resulting in successful enforcement actions.

  1. Regular meetings have provided the opportunity for discussion and analysis while also building relationships and trust and creating positive peer pressure to achieve results
  2. Systematic information and intelligence sharing has provided a collective knowledge and a sense of collective action. By acting together the Task Force is stronger than any of its individual members.
  3. Communication of incidents of illegal fishing and related actions taken by Task Force members is key – it encourages collective action.
  4. The Coordinating and Technical Advisory Teams are able to provide essential information to catalyse cases and support follow up actions.
